Back to School?

Our Vision Support Advocate, Tara, provides tailored support to schools and colleges, and one to one support for children, young people and their families.

In recent months Tara has spent time supporting sight-impaired children with their educational needs. For example, to ensure that appropriate exam provisions are in place, such as accessible formats, extra time, screen readers, scribes and additional breaks.

Tara has also worked alongside educators to ensure that the teaching environment is accessible and appropriate for individual students, e.g. checking lighting levels, improving contrast on floors to easily identify stairs and doorways and helping to make reading material accessible. She has also offered suggestions on what equipment may be of benefit to the students to help with their continued learning.

“Thank you so much for all your advice! I was really worrying about the future but you have helped put my mind at ease.” – Younger Client

There have also been several successful events including a trip to Aldingbourne Country Centre, a Halloween party, and a rock climbing / bowling event. These not only gave the children and young people some fun and exciting opportunities to meet but were valuable to their families who got to talk to other families in similar situations.
